Myth vs. fact

Let’s untangle the web.

Joro headlines travel fast. This page separates what looks dramatic from what the current evidence actually supports.

01

“Joro spiders can fly.”

Myth — mostly.

Adult Joros do not fly. Very young spiderlings can travel on air currents using silk through a process called ballooning.

02

“Joro spiders are deadly.”

Myth.

They use venom to capture prey but are not considered medically dangerous to people. Their appearance is more dramatic than their human-health risk.

03

“Joros are the size of your hand.”

It depends.

The body is much smaller, but the long legs of an adult female can create an impressive overall span. Describe body length and leg span separately.

04

“Every Joro should be killed.”

Not supported by current science.

Joros are introduced and established, but researchers are still studying their ecological impact. Presence alone is not a scientific removal mandate.
